The quartet Lühning moves on its own paths in the triangle between jazz, pop and electronic music. The band around singer Inga Lühning has developed a fresh and original sound from the different influences the band members bring along. Their songs are about their own experiences and emotions and sneak into the listeners' ears, free from being forced into rhyme. Inga Lühning's straightforward voice makes everyone want to hear more from her.

Since her debut CD with the quartet, Lühning (2002), Cologne-based Inga Lühning has taken her time. She's come a long way: Entfernung – distance – is what she calls her second album in German language. She spent the 1990s studying voice in Arnheim (Netherlands) and Virginia (USA), the Goethe Institute sent her to Addis Abbeba (Ethiopia). Touring with Die Fantastischen Vier and as the voice of the international reknown electronica/jazz project [re:jazz] took her to the big stages, Andreas Schneermann's musical versions of W.H. Auden poetry to the slightly smaller ones. But whichever musical context Inga Lühning performs in: she's got style.

The reduced bass lines Helmuth Fass (Megashira, Nosliw) plays on the album leave as much space for Inga Lühning's voice as for Christian Thom&ecaute;'s (Markus Stockhausen Trio, Arnie Bolden) dense drum playing. Mario Mammone (Lirico) shapes the transparent sound of Lühning with the breezy insinuations on his guitar, at times boiled down to hypnotic loops.

Entfernung was produced by Lars Bartkuhn (Sonar Kollektiv, Passion Dance Orchestra). It is one of the most interesting albums of the year 2008: full of surprises, musical transgressions and love for details. Lühning know the answer to the question how much art pop music can take: a lot! [more in Download]
